Electric Utility’s Default Service Rates Approved
On May 20, 2026 PURA approved the new default service rates for UI to become effective July 1, 2026.
As previously reported on May 15, 2026, UI filed for approval of its energy supply rates to take effect on 7/1/26, as part of its obligation to provide 45-days’ notice of supply rate changes for retail supplier awareness.
UI said, “As PURA is aware – and as it has been informing consumers – the price of oil and natural gas around the world directly impacts the wholesale price of electricity in New England, which is heavily reliant on natural gas fired power plants to meet electricity needs. Primarily due to the current geopolitical issues, natural gas prices have recently been especially volatile. Due to these factors, the average energy supply rate for LRS for industrial and large commercial customers will increase on July 1, 2026 relative to the LRS energy supply rate for the second quarter of 2026 (March 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026). As noted above, the July 1, 2026 LRS energy supply rate is significantly below the LRS energy supply rate for the first quarter of 2026 (January 1, 2026 to March 31, 2026).”
