Law Passed Restricting Agency Head Employment

Bill became law without Gov. Mills’ signature.  The bill becomes effective 23, 2025.  The new law is entitled An Act Related to the Work of the Public Advocate and a Commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission from Certain Employment Activities Following Service.

This new law prohibits the Public Advocate, or a MEPUC Commissioner serving or appointed on December 15, 2025, until 12 months after completion of their service from: (1) soliciting or accepting employment from a public utility; and (2) appearing before MEPUC in a proceeding for compensation, except that the Public Advocate may do so on behalf of a state agency or quasi-independent state entity that was party to a proceeding in which the Public Advocate was a party during their service.
