Commission Approves Utility’s New Default Service Rates
The New Hampshire PUC issued an order approving Unitil’s new rates after its default service solicitation. The new rates go into effect August 1, 2025.
“This order authorizes Unitil Energy Systems, Inc. (Unitil or the Company) to recover the costs of power supply through default energy service (Default Service) rates for effect for the six-month period of August 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026. The updated Default Service rate for Unitil’s Small Customer Group, which includes residential customers taking Default Service from Unitil, is 11.777 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), which will result in an increase in overall monthly bills for a typical residential customer using 650 kWh monthly and taking Default Service from Unitil of approximately 18.2 percent, or $22.56, compared to current rates.”
“(The Company has indicated in its petition that this increase is largely related to recent increases in natural gas prices, which, in turn, would lead to higher electricity prices). This rate includes a charge of 0.298 cents per kWh for Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) compliance costs. The RPS costs represent approximately 2.5 percent of the power supply charges for residential customers.)”
“The Commission also approves Unitil’s market-based ISO-New England procurement tranche of 50 percent of Small and Medium (which includes certain commercial and industrial (C&I) Default Service customers of Unitil) Customer Group load, and 100 percent of Large Customer Group load (which is comprised of Unitil’s Class G1, C&I customers) that take Default Service, and associated Tariff features, as initially approved by the Commission in Order No. 28,128 (April 9, 2025), in Docket No. DE 24-065.”
