MTPSC Adopts Staff’s Recommendation Requiring NWE To File Updated Application

Category: Uncategorized

The MTPSC issued Notice of Commission Action adopting Staff’s recommendations that the MTPSC “find NorthWestern’s application inadequate under the minimum filing standards and order NorthWestern to file all supplemental testimony and necessary statements, workpapers, and exhibits within two weeks to fully comply.”

Updated application due by August 21, 2024.

Northwestern Energy (NWE) applied for an increase in electricity and natural gas rates. NWE is requesting “An increase in the natural gas revenue requirement in the amount of $28,633,763, a return on equity of 10.8%, and an overall rate of return of 7.49% for natural gas utility assets.” Under the proposed new rates, the natural gas bill for an average residential customer using 65 therms per month would increase by $8.84, or 16.98%.

NWE has also requested an interim rate increase while the MTPSC considers the application. If approved, the temporary, interim rate would take effect on 1/1/25 and result in an average monthly bill increase of $4.81 per household.
