NY Power Authority Seeks Extension to File Grid Planning Report
Advanced technologies concept papers sought
On July 20, 2026, New York Power Authority (NYPA) filed a one-month extension request until August 9, 2026 to file comments on two May 10, 2026 state register notices regarding the coordinated grid planning process cycle 1 report and proposed local transmission projects. NYPA states that the issues raised are complex, and that additional time is needed to review NYISO’s short-term assessment of reliability report.
Previously on July 10, 2026 the Advanced Technologies Working Group filed its 2026 Call for Papers and notice of a webinar.
The concept papers should focus on commercially viable technologies that can modernize New York’s electric grid by supporting renewable energy integration. The solicitation emphasizes technologies that increase grid headroom, leverage advanced analytics such as AI and machine learning, and provide alternatives to traditional transmission upgrades. Technologies of interest include advanced protection systems, grid-forming inverters, energy storage, congestion relief solutions, and compact transmission infrastructure. Concept papers must describe the technology, quantify headroom and grid benefits, provide deployment experience and cost information, and outline implementation timelines. Selected technologies may be considered for technical workshops, pilot projects, and potential NYSERDA funding opportunities.
As background, the New York PSC opened this docket to implement the directives in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), which established an aggressive set of policy goals that will impact the electric grid, including electric transmission and distribution infrastructure.
The PSC’s initiating order establishing the scope of the proceedings stated its goal as “to develop and consider proposals for implementing the provisions of the Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act with respect to distribution and transmission upgrades, capital expenditures and planning. This initiating order also directed the utilities to develop local transmission and distribution projects.
