People’s Gas Files Gas Rate Increase
Also proposes changes to POR discount rates
Peoples Natural Gas Company LLC filed with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission a natural gas rate filing along with all supporting exhibits, standard data responses and testimony required to be submitted in conjunction with a tariff change seeking a general rate increase.
Peoples is seeking a base rate increase pursuant to 66 Pa. C.S. § 1308 of the Public Utility code with an issue date of March 27, 2026 and an effective date of May 26, 2026.
The Company’s filing reflects an overall revenue increase of approximately $163.2 million annually. In this filing, Peoples is updating the normal heating degree days used in the Weather Normalization Adjustment mechanism as described in its current and proposed retail tariffs on page 79.
Peoples’ filing notice to customers, which includes the most recently effective gas cost rates as of February 12, 2026, provides that if the Company’s entire request is approved: the total bill for a residential customer using 86 Mcf per year would increase from $122.20 to $138.23* per month or by 13.1%. Note that this amount excludes the Company’s proposed defined credit adjustment applicable to residential customers not enrolled in the Customer Assistance Program that is expected to be provided to customers in the first quarters of both 2027 and 2028.
If approved, the total bill for a commercial customer using 250 Mcf per year would increase from $271.47 to $314.05 per month or by 15.7%; and the total bill for an industrial customer using 1,750 Mcf per year would increase from $1,802.05 to $2,010.68 per month or by 11.6%.
As part of the filing People’s Gas proposes changes to its Purchase of Receivable (POR) rates and other changes.
For example, in the filing the utility proposes to set the residential POR discount at 1.930% and its commercial and industrial POR discount at 0.423%.
