REAL Launches All State Lobbyist Initiative Aimed At Allowing Large Energy Users To Procure Own Electricity!

Category: Legislation
Related Categories: Large Commercial Customer, REAL

REAL has developed a template for state legislation that allows large energy users to procure their own electricity. This would not be “deregulation” or a full market restructuring, rather a targeted approach that will help reduce costs for all customers by reducing the amount of new power generation the electric utilities will need to build to meet looming demand increases.

Highlights of the legislation include:

  • Allowing nonresidential customers 1MW+ (including aggregation) to procure electricity from a source outside of the utility
  • Establishing a cap on the total MWhs eligible
  • Requiring leave and return notices to the utility to provide planning certainty
  • Empowering the state regulatory body to establish rules to ensure no undue costs to utility ratepayers

We are hosting a virtual meeting on two separate dates to present the template, answer questions and identify priority states of interest from stakeholders. We will also share a toolkit with resources including talking points, fact sheets, data and FAQs to support state efforts.

Click the date below that works best for your schedule to register for the virtual presentation. If you are unable to attend and would like more information, please let me know (foster@retailenergychoice.org).

This model can be immediately applied in any state. REAL will be driving this legislation in several states in 2026 and is prepared to support partners in additional states of interest.

You must register to attend the meeting. Please feel free to share the registration link with colleagues and other potential advocates.
