On August 12, 2026, the Maine PUC issued a procedural order extending the deadline for comments to the Staff proposal in the Maine PUC’s inquiry regarding the future of natural gas to  September 4, 2026.

As reported previously, on August 6, 2026, Staff issued a straw proposal where it has proposed among other things: (1) minimum filing requirement guidelines that would allow Maine PUC natural gas decisions to take greenhouse gas emissions into account; and (2) a long-term planning and reporting requirement that gas utilities file integrated resource plans every five years.

The proposed plans would also include 10-year demand forecasts and assessments of demand-side energy management programs, supply options, infrastructure needs, and potential non-pipeline solutions, as well as actionable steps to demonstrate the plan’s consistency with state climate policies.
