SmartEnergy Responds to Staff’s Motion RE: Cancelling Customer Refund Checks

Dockets: 9613  ,Maryland

SmartEnergy filed a response (ML# 327507) to the Maryland Public Service Commission Staff’s motion (ML# 327491) regarding cancelling customer refund checks within 180 days of the date of issuance.  The 180 day timeline was established to facilitate the path of the payments.  Any uncashed dollar amounts would result in SmartEnergy paying those amounts to energy assistance programs.

In the motion, staff is asking SmartEnergy to, “refrain from cancelling any customer refund checks.”  SmartEnergy states in the motion that it was “unaware of Staff’s concern until receiving the motion.”  SmartEnergy states that they “will not be cancelling any outstanding checks and will issue a replacement check to any recipient who attempts to cash or deposit their check after a bank does not honor the check.”  This policy will continue until the remaining balance is submitted to the energy assistance program(s).
