In New York in Docket No. 24-E-0165 (I/M/O the Grid of the Future) the PSC granted extensions to DPS Staff until January 31, 2025, to develop the Grid Flexibility Study and February 28, 2025, to develop the first iteration of the Grid of the Future Plan.  

In addition, the Building Decarbonization Coalition filed comments requesting the inclusion of thermal energy networks (TENs) in the study being conducted by Brattle Group, or, in the alternative, in a separate study to inform the Grid of the Future proceeding.  Advanced Energy United filed comments in support of the Building Decarbonization Coalition’s comments. 

A Technical Conference was announced for  December 10th at 12:30pm to provide an overview of qualitative insights from the Grid Flexibility Study, including the barriers and solutions to grid flexibility deployment.

DPS Staff also published the slide presentation and recording of the November 15th technical conference. 

National Grid is launching a two-year initiative to deploy smart meters across Western New York. In Docket No. 24-E-0364 (Proactive Planning for Upgraded Electric Grid Infrastructure) Con Ed, NYSEG, RGE, NiMo, and Central Hudson filed their urgent infrastructure upgrade project proposals to support customer building electrification and vehicle electrification.  The Joint Utilities filed a proposal regarding criteria for the PSC to evaluate and fund these urgent upgrade projects.  

The NYISO Management Committee passed the draft Reliability Needs Assessment, which found that NYC could be facing grid reliability problems by 2033 due to increased peak demand and lack of new resources coming online.  

At the NYISO Installed Capacity Working Group meeting on November 4, 2024 the large energy consumers said that NYISO’s proposed changes to the special case resource (SCR) demand response program will cause a mass exodus of participants.
