Municipal Electric Department Receives Funds to Study Energy Storage
On June 17, 2026 the Chester Municipal Electric Light Department has been awarded funding through the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources’ AMP program to support a feasibility study for a proposed 1 MW battery energy storage system.
The study, conducted with Camelot Energy Group, will assess potential peak demand reduction, cost savings, and resilient backup power for critical town facilities. If viable, CMELD and the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company may seek additional AMP funding for project implementation.
As background, in December 2023, the Department of Energy Resources submitted a report based on findings from the Charging Forward: Energy Storage in a Net Zero Commonwealth study. This study identified energy storage as a cost-effective strategy to help meet Massachusetts’ clean energy targets outlined in the 2050 Clean Energy and Climate plan. Since then, the program has opened up the opportunity for public comment from stakeholders based on a list of specific questions from the DOER.
