Maryland Net Metering Customers Can Carry Over Excess Generation Credits
The Maryland PSC issued the following press release:
Beginning in 2024, Maryland net metering customers, including those with their own solar panels as well as community solar subscribers, can contact their electric utility to request that their banked net metering credits be carried over monthly until they are used up by electricity consumption. Prior to 2024, investor-owned electric companies were required to pay customers annually after their April bill for any excess generation remaining unused. The payouts only covered the production costs of generation and would typically reflect a value less than the full cost of delivered electricity.
Due to legislation (SB 143) passed in the 2023 Maryland General Assembly session, customers of Maryland’s investor-owned electric companies may now direct Baltimore Gas and Electric, Delmarva Power & Light, Pepco, and Potomac Edison to retain those credits for use in later months at the full retail value. Customers that wish to make a change should contact their electric company to opt in to the new method of indefinite accrual. Customers that take no action by each company’s deadline will remain on the existing annual payout until the account holder elects to change the payout method for the next year. Customers of Maryland’s electric cooperatives and municipal electric companies are not subject to the change in the law.
