PUCO Applies for $150 million in High-voltage SPARK Funding
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is seeking up to $150 million in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding for Ohio’s high-voltage transmission grid. The request is made under the newly announced Speed to Power through Accelerated Reconductoring and other Key Advanced Transmission Technology Upgrades (SPARK).
“Ohio intends to be a leader in the adoption of advanced transmission technologies,” stated PUCO Chair Jenifer French. “We look forward to the opportunity to partner with U.S. DOE with a mind towards innovation and affordability by encouraging advanced tech deployments to meet tomorrow’s energy needs.”
The PUCO submitted a concept paper highlighting “advanced transmission technologies” opportunities using advanced conductors, advanced power flow control, and dynamic line ratings as ways to improve the use of existing infrastructure.
As recognized in the PUCO’s February 2026 report, advanced transmission technologies include cost-effective alternatives to building new transmission or tools to maximize use of existing transmission assets. Effective deployment can reduce the need to build costly new electric transmission lines.
More information about SPARK is available on the U.S. DOE website.
