Parties File Briefs in Customer Smart Meter Complaint

Category: Ohio

On July 27, 2026 parties filed post hearing briefs regarding a complainant of Lynne Pultea, argues that Ohio Edison failed to provide accurate residential electric billing after installing a smart meter, resulting in a significant increase in her electric bills despite no changes in household occupancy, appliances, or energy usage.

In the complaint Lynne Pultea contends that Ohio Edison relied on remote diagnostics instead of independently testing the disputed meter and identified inconsistencies in its calibration, meter-reading, and billing records. She argues the utility failed to prove the smart meter was accurate or free from technical errors and asks the PUCO to recalculate her bills based on historical usage and waive disputed charges.

Ohio Edison argues that the customer did not meet her burden of proving the bills were unjust or unreasonable. Based on the accurate meter test, actual billing records, and a plausible explanation for the increased winter usage, Ohio Edison requests that PUCO dismiss the complaint with prejudice.
